I wanted to do at least one nice fall trip, so I decided to go the ridge walk & blueberry kingdom: Cady Ridge and then take the PCT north. The vague plan was to go however far I could go, with options of side trips to Blue Lake, White Mountain, or Indian Head Peak. I have never tried to push my mileage on a day, so I had no idea how far I could get. I was glad to make it all the way to White Mountain and even had time left for a side-trip to see Blue Lake for a total of 31 miles. I picked Cady Ridge because this allows me to efficiently climb to the ridge and hopefully enjoy a sunrise. We started at 5:30am and indeed did reach the ridge at sunrise, but it was cloudy, so that part was not very spectacular. The switchbacks at the bottom of the Cady Ridge trail are a bit frustrating: horrendously wide for no good reason (virtually no incline). On the road back I went straight down through the forest. All blowdowns have been cleared on the trail, and the trail is in good shape (saw some fresh horse prints also). The ridge walk was enjoyable and we arrived at the PCT at 8:30am. The clouds started to break at that point, which resulted in spectacular views on the PCT heading north. The whole area exceeded my expectations, but particularly the Kodak Peak area was breathtaking. Despite the efficiency of the PCT trail it was a bit slow going with photos and snack breaks. We arrived at Indian Pass at 10:15, and the Foam Creek intersection at noon. Except for the decent into Indian Pass, the views and fall colors were continuously great. There are so many berries in this area that I was starting to wonder where the bears went (sadly probably hunted). We did see a couple of deer somewhere and many marmots at White Pass. There is a very clear bootpath to White Mountain, and it's pretty safe (might be more sketchy if the meadow is wet). The views from the peak were gorgeous (as expected, I had seen photos from there, and that view had been a goal since then). I took a gazillion panoramas of [[Glacier Peak]] to make sure one succeeded. The walk back south on the PCT was great, because now I was walking in the right direction to enjoy the blueberry colors best. At Dishpan Gap (4pm) we took a short side-trip to Blue Mountain (Pt 6562) to see Blue Lake and enjoy even more panoramic views. This side-trip took a bit under 2 hours. The high trail is not in super good shape, but doable. We rushed back over the Cady Ridge to minimize headlamp time. We made it back to the end of the ridge at about 7:15pm, and used headlamp down until 8:20pm. Beside dirty ponds, the only small streams I noticed are north of Kodak Peak. I drank about 6 liters (started with 4 liters and refilled 2 bottles at those streams) Beautiful day, and I certainly will consider doing long trail days more!
